Artist's Description

There is a tension that exists between Canadian physicians and the government. In this single payer system, open lines of communication are essential. Unfortunately, these lines have eroded leaving doctors unable to effectively shape the healthcare system and their own profession. Denied the right to binding arbitration and job action, some physicians have organized to protest both for better treatment of medical professionals and patients. This painting depicts one of the first rallies held at Queenโ€™s Park in Toronto, Ontario.

ARTIST STATEMENT I am a Canadian radiologist and artist. Inspired by patients healthcare experiences and medical culture, my artistic focus is on exploring the development of professional identity including relationships between physicians and patients and between medical colleagues. BIOGRAPHY Kari Visscher was born in a small town in Southwestern Canada in 1982. Having grown up with a mother and uncle who were general practitioners, the medical profession was an integral part of her world. She straddled both the arts and sciences throughout her life eventually completing a Masters degree in Biomedical Communications and a Medical degree.
