Biography

Kari Visscher was born in a small town in Southwestern Canada in 1982. Having grown up with a mother and uncle who were general practitioners, the medical profession was an integral part of her world. She enjoyed both the arts and sciences throughout her life, eventually completing a Master's degree in Biomedical Communications and a Medical degree. Drawn to the visual subspecialties of medicine, Kari became a Radiologist and is currently an Adjunct Professor at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Her series of Radiology paintings and associated research has been presented at international medical conferences and published in peer-reviewed medical journals. She is an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists, which is the oldest existing professional art society in Canada. Her artwork has been internationally recognized in prestigious art competitions, including the ARC Salon, Figurativas, Mod Portrait, and the Kingston Prize, and in esteemed publications, including Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, and The Guide Artists.

Artist Statement

I am an artist, radiologist, and mother. Art provides the space to slow down and reflect on the life within and around me. The mindfulness gained in each step of the creative process is an opportunity to re-center, take a breath, process emotions and express in a way that can create beauty even from a place of unpleasantness. I gravitate toward moments of childhood innocence, love of family, and human connection.

I delight in painting forms with light that can range from the simplest of objects in a still life to the complexities of facial expressions in a portrait. An escape from every day can be found in dreaming of future work to composing images in my mind when listening to music. I value the challenge of learning a new technique and the community created by connecting with other artists. Even the excitement and disappointment that comes with art competitions are all part of this art journey that I esteem. Thank you for taking the time to read this and explore the work that holds pieces of who I am for others to see.
